Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Hydrating Primer Review

I’ve gone through more primers than I can count, and most of them feel the same after a while: a little silicone slip here, a little blurring there, nothing exciting.
But the first time I used the Fenty Beauty Soft Silk Pro Filt’r Hydrating Primer, I actually paused. It felt comfortable in a way I didn’t expect.
I originally bought it because I needed something that would smooth my skin without drying it out, especially on days when makeup sits a little unevenly.
I didn’t expect it to give that fresh, cushy feel the moment I blended it in. It changed how my base makeup behaves, and it’s one of the few primers I reach for without even thinking about it.
First Impressions and Packaging

The packaging instantly caught my eye.
The frosted glass bottle with the soft pink cap looks minimal but luxe, the kind of thing that just belongs on a clean white vanity.
I know packaging isn’t everything, but when you’re getting ready in the morning, it’s nice when your products look as good as they perform.
That being said, the packaging is a little on the heavier side, especially compared to my Kiko Milano primer. It’s not too bad, but it’s something to keep in mind if you plan to take it on travels.
When I first pumped it out, I noticed how lightweight and silky it felt. It wasn’t thick or silicone-heavy like some primers that almost feel like a film on your skin.
This one has more of a lotion-gel texture. It’s super smooth, almost like a moisturizer that sinks in easily.
I could already tell it leaned hydrating rather than mattifying, which was exactly what I needed.
How It Feels on the Skin

On my skin, which tends to be dry, this primer felt like a drink of water.
I applied about one pump all over my face, focusing on the areas where my makeup usually clings: around my nose and cheeks.
The moment it went on, I noticed that subtle “silky slip” without the greasy finish. It melts into the skin so naturally that within seconds, my face just looked plump and hydrated, not shiny.
What I love most is how it stays lightweight. Some hydrating primers can feel sticky or tacky while they set, but the Fenty Soft Silk doesn’t do that.
My face felt smooth to the touch, and I could tell it would hold foundation well without pilling or patching.
When I compared it to my usual moisturizing primers (like Too Faced Hangover or Milk Hydro Grip), I realized this one gives a smoother, more skin-like finish.
It doesn’t “grip” makeup like glue. Instead, it preps your skin so your foundation glides on evenly.
Under Foundation

This is where the magic happens. I’ve tested it under different foundations: a medium-coverage one and a lighter skin tint, and it performed beautifully both times.
My skin looks fresh, hydrated, and natural, not overdone.
With heavier foundations, it helps tone down that cakey look that can happen after a few hours. It makes the foundation spread easier and helps it melt into the skin instead of sitting on top.
My dry areas around the nose and chin stayed smooth all day. No flaking, no creasing.
I also noticed that it slightly blurs pores. It’s not a “blurring primer” per se, but it gives that soft-focus finish that makes your skin look like it had a great night’s sleep.
All-Day Wear
I tested it on a regular workday, which means eight hours in front of a laptop and at least two cups of coffee later.
My makeup still looked surprisingly even by the end of the day. Normally, I get that dry patchy look near my smile lines, but this primer seemed to prevent it.
Even when I didn’t wear foundation — just concealer and powder — it gave my skin a nice, smooth base that made everything blend more evenly.
I like that it never feels heavy or oily, even after hours. It keeps that hydrated glow without crossing the line into shine.
Texture and Finish

If I had to describe the finish in one word, it would be natural. It’s not matte, not dewy, somewhere right in between. It’s like a soft glow that makes your skin look healthy but still makeup-ready.
When I swatched it on my hand, you can see the slight sheen it leaves behind. That’s the hydration showing through.
Once it’s fully absorbed, the skin feels velvety, not wet. I think that balance is what makes this primer so wearable, especially for anyone who wants hydration without that heavy, greasy layer.
Scent and Application Experience
Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Hydrating Primer has a faint clean scent, but nothing strong or perfumey. It disappears almost immediately once applied.
I use two pumps for my whole face and half a pump more if my skin feels extra dry that day. It spreads so easily that you don’t need much.
I like applying it with my fingertips instead of a brush because it feels more like skincare that way. You can really feel it smoothing your skin as you blend it in.
How It Works with Different Skin Types

Even though I have dry skin, I can see this working for combination types too.
It’s hydrating but balanced. It doesn’t make my T-zone greasy. If you have oily skin, you might want to use less product or focus it on the drier parts of your face.
For anyone with normal to dry skin, though, this is a dream. It adds that soft moisture layer that keeps foundation from clinging or emphasizing fine lines.
On days when I skip foundation, it just makes my skin look naturally smooth and refreshed, like I put effort into skincare even when I didn’t.
My Makeup Routine with Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Hydrating Primer
Here’s how I usually use it:
- Start with my morning skincare (cleanser, serum, and moisturizer).
- Wait a few minutes for everything to absorb.
- Apply one pump of Fenty Soft Silk Primer all over my face.
- Let it set for about 30 seconds before applying foundation.
Note: If I’m using it under lighter coverage products like skin tint or tinted moisturizer, I skip my regular moisturizer because this primer is hydrating enough on its own.
When I wear powder foundation, I still use it. It helps powder sit better and not cling to dry patches.
Longevity and Value
The 30 mL bottle might look small, but a little goes a long way.
I’ve been using it regularly for weeks and still haven’t hit the halfway point. You only need a small amount to cover your face evenly.
At its price point, I’d say it’s worth it, especially if you’ve struggled with dryness or foundation clinging to texture.
I’ve tried both drugstore and high-end primers, and this one sits right in that sweet spot where it feels luxurious but not over-priced for the quality.

After using the Fenty Beauty Soft Silk Pro Filt’r Hydrating Primer for a few weeks, I can honestly say it’s one of my favorites.
It strikes that rare balance between hydration and smoothness. It’s enough to make your makeup last, but still comfortable enough to wear daily.
I love how my makeup looks with it: smoother, more even, and with that soft, natural glow that feels like my skin on a good day.
Every time I reach for it, I remember why I bought it in the first place: it makes getting ready easier and my skin happier.
So if you’ve been looking for a hydrating primer that feels luxurious but genuinely performs, this one is worth every pump.
